Intermittent Fasting Program
Per Brad Pilon, author of the intermittent fasting program "Eat Stop Eat", you can still lose weight if you fast one or two days per week, even if you do not cut your calories the rest of the week.  Stop Dieting and Start Living! Losing weight and shedding body fat does not have to be self-punishment every time you sit down to eat something you actually enjoy.
Brad Pilon is a nutritionist and an avid weight trainer. Using his "Anti Diet" method himself, he manages to maintain an incredible physique and optimal health while still enjoying through moderation the finest foods in life. Even though he spent over seven years working in the bodybuilding industry and has obtained certification as strength and conditioning specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, he does not consider himself an expert in this field. His passion is nutrition.
He spent years working in the Research & Development programs for a sports supplement company in the weight loss industry further researching eating methods and their effect on weight loss and muscle mass. He really wanted to understand the true rules of weight loss, so he enrolled in graduate school to study Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences at the graduate level.
Brad Pilon’s research found that there is no risk involved with intermittent fasting. He only found a host of beneficial effects! Even if one can undo the slimming effects of fasting by eating too much during the non-fasting days, there is scientific evidence that intermittent fasting has beneficial effects on the health and longevity similar to the effects of caloric restriction (CR). Unlike CR, which requires greater effort and more thought and initiative in planning meals, Intermittent Fasting is incredibly simple. Stanford University Medical Center’s retired chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr Donald Laub, he experimented with intermittent fasting and believes it is more feasible than daily calorie restriction. Dr Laub has lost forty pounds and gained stamina and energy, especially on fasting days.
In the Eat Stop Eat program, you use intermittent period of short fasting to actually boost your weight loss rate. These fasting periods are about 24 hours long and you determine if you want them to occur once or twice a week. He does not consider this as a diet, since there are no phases, no point systems, no weighing foods, and no foods that are ever off limits. The program does not require any difficult nutritional planning, special shopping trips, exotic foods or expensive supplements. It simply asks you to refrain from eating ideally for one or two days every week. While you are following Eat Stop Eat, you can incorporate any diet style you like during the non-fasting days. Of course, even though the general guideline of eating “lean and green†with lots of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices would be an ideal complement to the Eat Stop Eat lifestyle, you can incorporate any diet style you wish.
I read his entire 90 page simple and concise booklet on a Saturday afternoon and was fascinated by the science, most of all by the dieting myths he destroyed. This method can be incredibly effective as long as, after you have completed your fast, you go back to eating as you normally would, without making it up with additional calories.

- You will not get light-headed and cranky!
- You will still have energy to do great workouts.

- You will give your body a chance to establish better eating routines and usually what would be regarded as a tasty snack before undertaking the fast will no longer be so attractive afterwards.
CONS:
- Brad Pilon barely mentions the need to increase our fruit and vegetable intake and the replacement of sodium with spices. While he said that in moderation people can still enjoy all foods, we feell that the focus should be on quality foods first. He does not really mention what foods should not be eaten for better health or what foods set back fat loss. What about the health benefits of not drinking soda or fried foods on the days that we are not fasting? Eating one meal a day of cookies, cake and ice cream is not going to do much to help people lose weight. Intermittent Fasting on crap will NOT give you good weight loss results. However, even if you were to gorge yourself on your eating days to the point where you don’t lose any weight at all, you will still see some of the health benefits associated with fasting, such as improved insulin sensitivity and decreased oxidant stress.
- To be successful, your weekly calorie intake should drop as you are essentially cutting out all the calories during the 1-2 days of fasting. However, you may experience a tendency to overeat after the 24 hour fast. If you eat too much of fattening foods you will not lose weight. When I tried that method, I would overeat after the fast, until I set fixed calorie schedule for the day after the fast. However, I have to admit that the program made me more aware and comfortable with the sensation of being hungry and felt absolutely wonderful during the fasting hours!
- Even though Brad Pilon says Atkins is ineffective in the long run, he never calls it unsafe.
- The body of certain types of athletes needs food all day. I doubt that all athletes would perform better after 24 hour fast.
- People who have a hard time gaining muscle weight should adopt the “bodybuilding lifestyle†of six small daily meals but need to follow Brad’s method if and when they need to lose any belly fat without having to suffer through it.
- This is a flexible program requiring discipline to follow it: even though 24 hours of fasting is a short period, it may take some time to getting used to. For some people fasting for a full day can be harder than it sounds.
- Diabetics who take insulin or other medications cannot skip meals because of the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). However, Type II diabetics WHO ARE NOT ON INSULIN OR MEDICATION generally have HIGH blood sugar rather than low. Therefore, the risk of low blood sugar levels is very low in these individuals. In any case, people with any medical concerns should consult their physician before they adopt this method of weight loss.
